---------- Updated for 2020 ----------

Quick Checklist

You can read the page below for details, but at a minimum, the following list has all the things you need to do before the season starts.

  • 1. Get your daughter a stick, shinguards, goggles and a mouthguard.
  • 2. Make sure your daughter has a uniform.Click here to order
  • 3. Sign up for the Remind App. Text @fh6677 to 81010 to join.
  • 4. Make sure you've given me any e-mail addresses you want on my e-mail list
  • 5. Fill out the player info form. Click here for the form.

Equipment

All girls will need a stick, shinguards, goggles and a mouthguard at every practice. If you don't have your mouthguard and goggles you will not be allowed to play.

Until your daughter really gets into Field Hockey she doesn't need a special stick. A basic stick is fine for now. I would suggest you go to Longstreth.com and find a decent stick. If you spend $100 bucks on a stick you're probably getting something that's pretty good. Make sure you don't get her an indoor stick though. Use the code CLUB15 for 15% off and free shipping at Longstreth. They usually have a few good sticks on sale. Check for sticks from the previous year, sometimes there are good deals there. The most important thing about the stick is that it's the correct length, here is a guide to size your stick. It's okay to get one a little longer if your daughter will be growing.

Uniforms

If you're reading this after about July 15th 2020, then you are likely too late to order a uniform. If it's after that date and you don't have a uniform send me an e-mail right now and I'll let you know if you can still get one.

You need to purchase a uniform if your daughter does not have one from a prior year. Click here to order a uniform. If you want to try on a sample first, e-mail me and we will set up a time for you to try one on. When it asks for the uniform number, enter the number your daughter would like to have. If it's available she'll get it, if it's taken then I'll assign her a different number. It takes about 5 weeks to get the uniforms and we'll only do one order so if you miss that order period then your daughter will not have a uniform and she will have to wear a pinnie. There will not be a second order placed so if you miss the deadline you're out of luck. She'll need both a jersey and kilt. You don't have to buy the compression shorts unless you want to. She can wear any dark compression shorts under her kilt.

Communications

I'm the self proclaimed King Of E-Mail. I write too many and they're all too long but I like to keep my parents informed. I will mainly use e-mail and the website to communicate with you, but I will also use the Remind App to sent out messages such as last minute game cancellations. To sign up for the text notifications text @fh6677 to 81010. If you don't understand how to sign up for the Remind app ask your kid to do it for you. I would also recommend that if your daughter has a cell phone that she signs up for the app as well.

I check my e-mail many times throughout the day so you can always e-mail me at mcnuttb@gmail.com or call or text me at 973-619-4649.

How To Get Better

I've compiled a bunch of videos that your daughter (and you) can watch to learn the game of Field Hockey and they're posted on the video page of our website. I also made one of the videos to help you learn the rules and that's here. If you are new to the sport the rules can be very confusing and if you are a veteran to the sport, the rules can be very confusing. Field Hockey is an easy sport to play and an extremely difficult sport to be really good at. The most important thing for your daughter to work on is her stick skills which she can work on on her own. There are a number of videos on the site that will give her some drills to do.

Field Hockey at it's highest level is nearly as fast as ice hockey and there are some videos of international competition and you can see just how incredibly talented Field Hockey players can be and how exciting the game can be. Our games won't look like that, (unfortunately) but who knows how far some of our players will go and the high school games are a lot of fun to watch.

Practice Schedule

The practice and game schedule will be located on our main page. The schedule of who's playing in each game is also on that page. Playing time may be reflective of practice time. I know that kids now-a-days are involved in an incredible number of activities so I don't have a problem if any of our players miss a practice every once in a while, but if a player is never at a practice she may not play as much in the games. I believe equal playing time to a girl who never shows up to practice is not fair to the girls who show up to every practice and we will adjust accordingly.

As to the schedule, you must notify me if your daughter will not be at a game that she's scheduled to play as soon as you know she can't make it. I will put a lot of time into coaching this team, and I love doing it, but you gotta help me out and let me know if your daughter can't make a game that she's scheduled to play. If your daughter does not show up to a game she was scheduled for you'll be hearing from me. Please do not notify me if you're daughter will not be at a practice, only games.

Our practices will start and end on time. Nothing makes parents (including me) more aggravated than having to sit in the parking lot for a half hour waiting for a practice to end. That will not happen here. We may run over a few minutes a couple times throughout the course of the season but for the most part, if the schedule says practice ends at 7:30 then practice will end at 7:30 and your kid will be at the car by 7:35. Barring a hurricane we will never end practice early and some late season practices will be cold so dress for it.
